About BLT Dip

We all have our favorite foods, and for me, the BLT is the ultimate sandwich. It’s what I order whenever I’m trying out a new sandwich shop, because I figure if they can do the classics right then it’s worth trying out the other items on the menu.

Although, if I’m being honest here, if I discover they can rock a BLT?

That’s all I’m going to order. Which is the case for many of the restaurants an old friend of mine and I go to.

So, being the experienced BLT connoisseur I am, when I say a BLT is good, then it’s good.

And this BLT dip?

It’s everything I love about the sandwich, only more.

More delicious flavor. More control over the filling-to-bread ratio. More fun to eat.

Trust me, if you’re a fan of the BLT and are looking for a new way to jazz it up, this dip is totally worth inviting a few friends over to share it with.

What can you serve chilled BLT dip?

When it comes to this BLT dip, I personally feel the best dipping choice is toasted bread. White, French, bagel, pumpernickel, you name it – whatever type of bread you enjoy a BLT sandwich on will be a great choice for dipping with this bread.

However, if you’re looking for a more “classic” dip experience, you can go with any (or many!) of these classic dipping choices:

Can you make this dip in advance?

One of the most common questions I get about party dips is whether or not you can make them in advance. And I totally understand why someone would want to do this; it’s easier to prepare eats for a party the night before than scrambling to get everything done the day of the event.

The good news is that the answer to this question is almost always yes, and that is the case for this dip.

To refrigerate this dip: Add dip to a bowl with a sealable lid. Secure lid and store in the refrigerator for up to two days. When ready to serve, you can set the dip out immediately; there’s no need to let it get to room temperature first. This dip is best served chilled.

Due to the mayonnaize in the recipe, freezing this dip is not recommended.

How long can you leave out a party dip?

Whenever you serve a dip for your guests to enjoy, you should always keep track of how long it sits at room temperature.

For most foods, the general rule of thumb is that a perishable item should not be in the “danger zone” for more than two hours. And by “danger zone”, this is usually at or just above room temperature. I recommend preparing this dip with chilled ingredients or serving it chilled, as this should give you more time (about one hour) before the dip reaches room temperature.

So, in total, this dip can be left out for “about” three hours, depending on the start temperature and the temperature of the room. However, be sure to still check the dip every now and then – mayonnaise can be tricky like that.

Once you pass the recommended time, you can cover the dip and place it back in the refrigerator. If your guests still want more dip, let it chill for at least 30 minutes before bringing it back out again.

Notes & tips for this BLT dip recipe

  • For this recipe, I used pre-cooked bacon bits to make preparation easier, but you can totally use freshly cooked bacon instead.
  • I lined the bowl with lettuce leaves for presentation, but you can skip those if you’d like. They’re not meant to be eaten so they’re totally optional.

Step 1 – In a large bowl, add the sour cream, mayonnaise, tomato, bacon, cheddar cheese, and lettuce.

Ingredients 

  • 2 cup sour cream
  • 12 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 cup tomato, chopped, plus more for garnish (optional)
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, optional
  • 1 cup lettuce, shredded
  • 2 tbsp green onion, chopped (optional, garnish)
  • toasted bread, for dipping
  • romaine lettuce leaves, for lining bowl (optional)

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, add sour cream, mayonnaise, bacon, tomato, cheddar cheese, and lettuce. Use a spatula to thoroughly mix all ingredients together.
  • Serve dip immediately with toasted sliced bread for dipping. If desired, add some chopped tomato and green onion as garnish on top.
