About Buttered Rum Fudge

I love gifting food during the holidays (because, hey, that’s what us foodies do) and one of my all-time favorites to gift is fudge. I may be a little biased, but I really think it’s one of the best food gifts. It’s easy to make, keeps well, and can be made in tons of flavors.

I already have a few favorite fudge recipes up my sleeve, but this buttered rum fudge has quickly become my new obsession. It’s got that perfect blend of white chocolate fudge and hot buttered rum that brings out all the best memories of the holidays.

Plus, this was another festive treat I was able to make with Don Q rum.

I went with Don Q Gran Añejo rum this time around since it’s oak and vanilla aroma (due to being aged in American white oak barrels) was a perfect match for the creamy white fudge I had in mind. Don Q rum has no additives, artificial sugars, or coloring, so the quality alone makes it an ideal ingredient for mixing or making gifts for family and friends. Don Q is also environmentally conscious, as their Destilería Serrallés one of the most environmentally responsible in the spirits industry. They reap the benefits of real energy return, as well as a water reclamation program which allows them to recycle the wastewater, instead of disposing of it in the ocean.

So, in other words, the only thing better than enjoying Don Q itself is knowing that your choice of rum is made with quality and care.

Because that’s exactly what any decadent holiday treat needs: total peace of mind so you can focus on enjoying a few (or more!) pieces of fudge.

How should fudge be stored?

For best results, I recommend storing the fudge in the refrigerator in an air-tight container. This ensures the fudge stays firm and will have a longer shelf life (about two weeks).

If storing fudge on the counter, be aware that it may soften or appear to “melt” a little. However, this doesn’t always happen; it all depends on the exact temperature of the room. So when storing fudge at room temperature, be sure to keep it in a cool, dark place. It’s also best to wrap or separate each piece of fudge with plastic wrap or wax paper so that the fudge does not stick together.

Can you freeze fudge?

Yes! Fudge freezes very well. For best results, wrap each piece of fudge with plastic wrap or wax paper and store in an air-tight container or freezer bag.

Fudge can be frozen for several months.

How to make fudge

Overall, all good fudge recipes have the same basic ingredients:

  • Chocolate of your choice.
  • Sweetened condensed milk (or similar substitute ingredient.)
  • “Usually” a bit of butter, depending on the next ingredient
  • Flavorings of your choice.

No matter what combination of the above ingredients you use, I highly recommend using quality bar chocolate (made with bar chocolate, not chips or melting wafers). To incorporate the ingredients correctly, fudge should be mixed quickly, and a good bar chocolate will melt better and give a better consistency while stirring.

This is also another reason why Don Q Gran Añejo rum was a great compliment to this recipe, as it’s delightfully smooth and lush with pronounced notes of vanilla, cinnamon, and honey.

Notes & tips for this buttered rum fudge

  • I mentioned this above, but I do think it’s worth repeating: fudge should be mixed quickly so ensure that all the ingredients incorporate, so I recommend measuring all ingredients out before you begin.
  • Don Q is an ideal rum for this fudge. I used their Gran Añejo rum, but they have plenty of other flavors you could try – be sure to check them out!
  • If you’re in the mood for rum, Don Q is also an ideal substitute for whiskeys in Old Fashioned cocktails. I highly recommend trying it!

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Line an 8x8 baking dish with parchment paper or aluminum foil, extending pieces over the sides for easy handling. If using foil, spray with cooking spray. Set dish aside.
  • In a microwave-safe bowl, add white chocolate, butter, and sweetened condensed milk. Heat in the microwave for 30 seconds on 50% power, then stir. Continue to heat for 30 second intervals, mixing in between, until chocolate has completely melted.
  • Quickly add rum, vanilla extract, and salt to fudge mixture, then stir thoroughly until white chocolate has absorbed the rum and extract.
  • Pour fudge in the prepared baking dish and smooth out the top in an even layer. If desired, dust the top of the fudge with ground cinnamon.
  • Refrigerate fudge for at least 3 hours or until set.
  • Lift fudge out of baking dish by gripping excess paper/foil along the sides, then transfer fudge to a work area. Peal back paper/foil from edges of fudge, then cut fudge into 1 inch squares or cut with festive cookie cutters.
  • Serve fudge immediately.

I had really high hopes for this recipe. Absolutely nobody liked it. It was quite bland. The texture was great, but that was about it. Maybe with some more spices it would be salvageable? I’m not sure, but I won’t be making it again to find out.

I will be making this for sure. You certainly have me sold on the rum.

Is it possible to make this without any kind of alcohol

      • Jeff

The alcohol in two tablespoons of rum will evaporate quickly when mixing with the hot ingredients. If you’re that freaked-out about alcohol, don’t use rum. Use some kind of artificial flavoring instead.

I have a few people left on my Christmas list that would adore this. And I have just the rum to make it 😉
