About Christmas Crack Dip

Christmas Crack Dip! A festive dip that's perfect for saltine toffee lovers! Ultra creamy chocolate with Heath toffee bits and dipped with your favorite salty crackers. | HomemadeHooplah.com

Every holiday season you can pretty much guarantee that there will be a handful of festive recipes flooding your Facebook and Pinterest feeds. I’m sure you’ve seen them – they’re the types of foods and snacks that only come out this time of year (despite how absolutely delicious they might be).

I always used to see these recipes, too, but I think I’ve become more sensitive to them since I started this little food blog. I mean, I’ve always been a foodie, but being in “the community” has lead to me discovering all types of new treats I never even knew existed. Just when I think I’ve found them all, a new come crops up.

And out of all of these novelty holiday treats, you know which one I’ve found the most interesting?

Christmas Crack.

The first time I saw this recipe was on Lovefoodies, and I’ve seen a few variations of it since then. But no matter who makes the recipe, they all have the same to main components: chocolate (usually dark or toffee, like a Heath bar) and saltine crackers. Nuts and sprinkles are also a popular addition (because, hey, why not?)

What I find the most interesting is how easy the recipe is…  and, of course, how addicting it can be.

So I was skeptical about trying Christmas Crack, but this year I finally decided to take the plunge. This is a recipe that clearly makes the best of a salty and sweet combination, and let me tell you, it totally works.

Plus, it’s a super easy treat to make during the holidays.

For those of you who frequent this little food blog, you already know how much I love turning classic desserts into dips. And once I tried Christmas Crack (or more commonly known as saltine toffee) I could already tell how awesome it would be as a fun party dip.

The dip has a rich and creamy chocolate base, making it a guaranteed crowd pleaser. Next, Heath toffee bits are added, to give it an extra kick of flavor and nutty crunch. More toffee bits are added on top, plus some holiday sprinkles for that extra touch of festiveness. Finally, you can use your favorite salty cracker for dipping, whether it be classic saltines or butter crackers.

How to make Heath Toffee Bits

I always try to stock up on baking essentials during the holiday season, and sometimes I’m lucky enough to snag a bag of Heath English Toffee Bits. I’ve used them in plenty of desserts before, from cakes to cookies and now this saltine toffee dip, so they’re always great to have around – if you can find them. It’s a bit of a gamble if the local stores will stock it, and this holiday season, I couldn’t find a bag anywhere.

But fear not! If you’re in the same boat as me, it’s super easy to make your own toffee bits.

All you need is a few large Heath bars (the fun size works too), a plastic bag, and a rolling pin.

Just place the unwrapped Heath bars in the plastic bag, seal it up, and use the rolling pin to tap and crush the candy down into a size of your choice.

Voilà! You now have all the Heath English Toffee Bits you need to make any festive treat.

Notes & tips for this Christmas crack dip

  • Whipping homemade cream can sometimes be tricky, so I always recommend you use cream that is extremely fresh (just opened for the first time) and that it is very chilled. Either wait to remove the cream from the refrigerator until just before you’re ready to whip OR you can set the cream in the freezer for 15 minutes before use. I’ve also heard of people freezing their whisk attachments or mixing bowls, especially if your bowl is metal, glass, or porcelain. Every little bit helps!
  • For this recipe, I highly recommend using a stand mixer or a hand mixer. This isn’t a recipe you can make by hand with a whisk.
  • Depending on how well your cream whips, this recipe could make just enough for a big serving bowl or maybe enough for two serving bowls. If you have extra, the dip can be stored in the fridge in a sealed container (up to 2 -3 days) and used for any sort of sweet topping (or just more dip!)

          Yields: 8 servings

          Ingredients

          • 2 cup heavy whipping cream very cold
          • 1/3 cup powdered sugar
          • 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
          • 1 tsp vanilla extract
          • 1 cup Heath toffee bits plus more for topping
          • sprinkles for decorating (optional)
          • saltine crackers for dipping
          US Customary - Metric

          Instructions

          1. Using a stand mixer (or a hand mixer + large bowl), blend together heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and vanilla on high until dip has the consistency of fluffy frosting, about 3-5 minutes.

          2. Turn off mixer and scrape along the sides of the bowl, mixing in any wayward cocoa or sugar. Taste test the dip; it should taste like rich dark chocolate at this stage. If you'd like a sweeter base for your dip, you can add anywhere from 1-4  tablespoons more powdered sugar. (Keep in mind that the toffee bits will sweeten the dip as well).

          3. Pour in Heath toffee bits and gently fold them into the chocolate cream until toffee is thoroughly mixed throughout.

          4. Transfer Christmas crack dip to a serving bowl and top with more toffee bits and festive sprinkles. Serve immediately with saltine crackers for dipping.

Mmmm…this chocolatey dip looks amazing! I bet it would be something the kids would really enjoy making for the holidays. However, I’d definitely swap the salty crackers for something sweet, like Graham Crackers. I’m probably the only person in the world that just can’t get on board the “salty-sweet’ craze. For my taste buds, it’s one or the other, but NEVER together! 🙂

I can totally understand where you’re coming from, Cait 🙂 Thankfully this is the kinda dip that would work with both salty or sweet.
