About Eggnog Dip

If you’re the type that looks forward to eggnog every season, then this dip is a must-make for your next holiday party (or for binge-watching festive Hallmark movies).

What to serve with eggnog dip?

After making so many dessert dips, I have a whole list of options that go great with these creamy treats.

Feel free to try one (or many!) of these with this festive holiday dip.

How long can you leave out a dessert dip?

Whenever you serve a dip for your guests to enjoy, you should always keep track of how long it sits at room temperature.

For most foods, the general rule of thumb is that a perishable item should not be in the “danger zone” for more than two hours. And by “danger zone”, this is usually at or just above room temperature. This dip will still be a little chilled when served, and this should give you an extra 30 minutes beyond the two-hour window, depending on the temperature of the room and how long ago the cheese ball left the refrigerator.

As the party goes on, you can return the dip to the refrigerator once you get past the two-hour mark. If your guests still want more dip, let it chill for at least 30 minutes before bringing it back out again.

Can you use homemade eggnog?

Yes, you can use homemade eggnog, so long as it’s either:

  • The type of eggnog where the eggs have been tempered (slightly cooked). If you used heat at all while making the eggnog, this is the type of eggnog it would be.
  • Uncooked eggnog with a healthy dose of rum. This is because eggnog does include eggs (hence the name) and uncooked eggs could spell an unintended disaster for a dip that’s been left on the counter for a few hours. But as long as the eggnog was prepared with a high portion of alcohol, this should limit the growth of bacteria. You can read more about that here: Why You Shouldn’t Fear The Eggnog.

So, overall, storebought eggnog will still be your best bet for this dip, but homemade eggnog can be used so long as you make sure it’s been prepared in such a way that limits the concern of food-borne illnesses.

Can you make this dip in advance?

One of the most common questions I get about dips is whether or not you can make them in advance. I totally understand why someone would want to do this, as it’s easier to prepare treats for a party the night before than scrambling to get everything done the day of the event.

And the good news here is that yes, you totally can!

This dip needs to be chilled at least one hour before serving, but it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two to three days.

Can you freeze this dip?

Yes, you totally can!

To freeze this dip, store it in a sealable container in the freezer for one to two months. When ready to eat, let the dip thaw in the refrigerator overnight, then serve as desired.

Notes & tips for eggnog dip

  • For this recipe, I highly recommend using a stand mixer or a hand mixer. This recipe would be a bit tiresome to make by hand.

Just joined and everything looks delicious. So excited to start trying. Can you use a teaspoon of rum instead of extract. Thanks
