About Oven Baked Tortilla Chips

I’ve shared a lot of dip recipes over the years, but in many of them, there’s another recipe I’m whipping up at the same time that I don’t talk about. And it’s not because it’s not a good recipe – because it totally is – but it’s so easy that it almost doesn’t feel like a recipe.

Plus, I don’t want to overcomplicate a simple dip by adding more work. Who needs that, amirite? But, on the other hand, there are moments when you might prefer to make this second “hidden” recipe. Because maybe you already have the ingredients on hand, or maybe you’d prefer the taste overstore-bought items.

And even if this recipe is super easy (which it totally is) it’s not like I always knew how to make it. Somewhere in my foodie past, I had to learn the ropes, and I thought maybe there’d be value in sharing the method with you guys, too.

So, without further ado, I bring you one of the simplest recipes I’ve ever posted:

How to make this baked tortilla chips recipe

Step 1 – Start off with a package of corn tortilla chips. Depending on the size of chips you want, you can use anything between the 4.5-inch to the 8-inch tortillas. Then, take a very sharp knife (or pizza cutter) and cut the tortilla into fourths, as shown above.

Step 2 – This step you can get creative with, because it has to do with flavoring. To give the chips a bit of flavor, you want to spray or brush them with something before baking, whether it be a bit of butter, cooking spray, olive oil, etc etc. When I made mine, I gave each chip a liberal brushing of olive oil.

Step 3 – Arrange the chips on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake until crispy.

Step 4 – Once the chips are cooling, you can toss on more flavoring of your choice. This could be a creative mix of spices (garlic powder and onion powder anyone?) or just simple sea salt. Since I was making these chips to serve with salsa, I settled for a generous coating of coarse sea salt.

And voilà! You’ve now successfully made tasty corn chips at home that are both better for you than fried (and no oil cleanup) and are whatever flavor you can dream up. Enjoy!

How long do homemade baked chips last?

In general, these oven baked chips will last anywhere from one to two weeks if stored in an air-tight container. The duration will vary a little depending on how much oil you use (more used = less longevity) or other heavy flavorings (excess seasonings, etc).
