About Honey Garlic Chicken Wings

It took me a while to warm up to baked crispy chicken wings, but now that I have, I can’t get enough.

Thankfully an old friend of mine has been a good sport about it, having wings for dinner multiple nights a week without a single complaint. And I hope he continues to humor me and my obsession, because now that I’ve got a honey garlic chicken wings recipe I love, it’s going to be showing up on our weekly menu for the foreseeable future.

And really, can you blame me? What’s there not to love about this dish?

It’s “crispy baked chicken wings outsides and tender insides, drenched in a sticky honey garlic glaze” we’re talking about here.

That’s like five wins in one sentence.

They’re that good.

How long to bake chicken wings

There are a couple different methods, but when baking raw chicken wings, you can use any one of these three:

  • 400 degrees F for 40-45 minutes (my favorite).
  • 375 degrees F for 50-55 minutes.
  • 350 degrees F for 55-60 minutes.

However, no matter what cook time you prefer, always check your wings before taking them out of the oven. The juices should run clear and a heat thermometer should have the internal temperature for 165 degrees F.

Also, be sure to check that the skin is browned and crispy to your liking.

Can you freeze chicken wings?

Yes, you totally can!

To freeze, allow the chicken wings to cool completely and then transfer to a freezer bag, removing as much air as possible before sealing. Baked chicken wings can be frozen for up to three months.

When ready to eat, let the chicken wings thaw in the refrigerator overnight, then bake the chicken wings for 25-30 minutes at 325 degrees F or until heated through.

          Step 3 – Bake!

Step 4 – While the chicken bakes, prepare the sauce. Boil the honey, soy sauce, ginger, garlic, and chili powder (if using) for three or four minutes or until the sauce is reduced and has a thick consistency and a dark golden color. Remove the saucepan from heat and cover.

Step 5 – Working quickly, add the baked chicken wings into a bowl and pour the honey garlic sauce on top. This step works best if both the sauce and the chicken are hot so that the sauce will be more fluid. Use a spatula to toss and turn the chicken wings until they’re coated in sauce. If you’re having trouble, just be patient; the sauce will eventually thin and cover all of the chicken wings.

          Instructions

          For the Baked Chicken Wings

          1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, then set aside.
          2. In a large bowl, add raw chicken wings. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Use a pair of tongs or a spatula to gently toss the chicken wings to coat.

          3. Arrange chicken wings in an even layer on the prepared baking sheet.
          4. Bake chicken wings for 40 minutes or until juices run clear, turning them half way through.

          For the Honey Garlic Sauce

          1. In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, bring honey, soy sauce, ginger, garlic, and chili powder (optional) to a rapid boil. Allow to simmer, stirring occasionally, for 3-4 minutes or until sauce is reduced by 1/2.

          2. Remove saucepan from heat. Cover and set aside.

          Putting it all together

          1. Working quickly, place baked chicken wings in a bowl, then pour prepared honey garlic glaze on top. This step works best if both the chicken and the sauce are hot. Use a spatula to toss the chicken wings until they are coated in the glaze. Note: It's okay if the glaze is thick, but it should pour easily. If it doesn't, microwave the glaze for 30 seconds at a time until it's liquid again, then quickly pour over the chicken wings.

          2. Serve honey garlic chicken wings immediately with chopped cilantro as garnish (optional).
