Milkshakes are considered a gold standard for easy, take-it-with-you desserts. And better yet, a milkshake can also be a refreshing drink.

Especially when it’s a mint chocolate milkshake.

And that’s exactly what this mint chocolate chip milkshake is: a refreshingly sweet treat that you can whip together with just two ingredients.

Can you add alcohol?

Certainly! Feel free to add a standard shot of your favorite liqueur or alcohol when blending this milkshake. To keep with the flavor profile, I’d recommend either Creme de Menthe or a chocolate liqueur. You could also add Baileys for extra creaminess or Kahlua for a coffee kick.

Can you store a milkshake in the refrigerator?

Due to the ice cream in this milkshake, it’s not possible to store it in the refrigerator for a long period of time. The average refrigerator temperature is still higher than what ice cream needs to stay solid, so while the refrigerator will slow down how fast the milkshake melts, it will still eventually transform from a creamy solid to a liquid.

Only store the milkshake in the refrigerator if it’s temporary (one hour maximum) and only do this if you are okay with the milkshake continuing to melt.

This also means that it’s not recommended to make these milkshakes in advance unless you intend on freezing them.

Can you freeze a milkshake?

Yes, you totally can! Freezing a milkshake is actually the best way to save it for later and still keep the ice cream in a thickened state.

For best results, transfer the milkshake to a sealed container before freezing. Keep in mind that due to the additional liquid (from the milk) the milkshake will freeze completely solid during this process. Once frozen, the milkshake should remain good for up to four to six months.

When ready to drink, cold thaw the milkshake by placing it in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes or until the desired consistency is reached.

Notes & tips for a mint chocolate shake

  • If you’d like a thicker milkshake, adjust the milk from 3/4 cup to 1/2 cup. If you’d like a thinner milkshake, adjust the milk from 3/4 cup to 1 cup.
  • To keep your milkshake frosty, chill the glasses in the freezer for 10-20 minutes before using.
  • To make blending easier, use small scoops of ice cream.
  • This recipe is designed to use whole milk. If you use a different type, start off by using a 1/2 cup of milk and check the consistency. You can always add more milk if you need to, up to another 1/2 cup.

Instructions

  • In a food processor or blender, add the mint chocolate chip ice cream and milk. Pulse or blend until milk is incorporated and consistency is smooth.
