About Peeps S’mores

Peeps were one of the best Easter candies when we were younger, amirite? I mean, sure, we’d eat a whole box in one sitting and regret it an hour later, but before that, we’d be in absolute sugary marshmallow bliss.

Holiday candy has changed a lot since then, and I admit I haven’t given Peeps the attention I used to. There are just many so options now that it’s hard to get to them all before the season is over.

However, I’m always interested in trying new ideas for old favorites, so when I first saw Peeps s’mores making the rounds on Pinterest, I was intrigued.

In fact, I was so intrigued that Peeps were suddenly at the top of my holiday candy list again. And, really, even if you’re not a Peeps fan, who can resist all those festive colors? Or the promise of a whole dish of baked s’mores goodness?

I simply had to give it a go.

Are Peeps good for s’mores?

If you’re anything like me, you saw the recipe videos for Peeps s’more and thought…  no way. Really? I mean, cute idea and all, but that can’t actually work, right?

In fact, I was so skeptical I (clearly) had to try making it myself, and you know what I discovered?

It totally works.

Peep s’mores taste just like classic s’mores. And I really mean that – they taste exactly the same. In fact, I wouldn’t have known I was using Peeps instead of classic marshmallows if it weren’t for all the neon sanding sugar.

So whether you’ve always been a fan of Peeps or you’re not a fan and have been wondering what use you could possibly have for them, I can guarantee you will like them in this s’mores dip.

How do you bake s’mores in the oven?

Nothing beats s’mores by an open fire, but if you’re looking for the next best thing, baked s’mores are easier to make than you think.

All you need is:

  • A sweet, meltable filling of your choice. Chocolate is the standard choice here, but you can get more creative with baked s’mores than you can with traditional s’mores. I’ve listed some of my favorite ideas below!
  • Fluffy marshmallow topping. I used festive Peeps, but you can also use traditional marshmallows.
  • Graham crackers for dipping.

To bake s’mores:

  • Layer your chosen filling in a shallow dish.
  • Top with a solid layer of marshmallows.
  • Broil on HIGH for 1-2 minutes (keep a close eye on it – the marshmallows can burn quickly!)
  • Dip and enjoy!

What fillings can you use?

When baking s’mores, you can go with the traditional chocolate (milk, semi-sweet, or bittersweet) or you can add other flavors and candy as you see fit. Here are some of my favorite options:

What kind of baking dish can you use for s’mores?

You can use any wide, shallow oven-safe baking dish or pan for this recipe, but here are a few suggestions:

How long can you leave out a dessert dip?

Many dips can only be left out for a few hours due to perishable ingredients, but for this s’mores dip? Since there are no perishable items, you don’t need to watch the clock. You can leave it out as long as you like.

The only time-constraint you’ll have is keeping the chocolate melted. You can either reheat the dip in the microwave (15-30 seconds), bake it in the oven at 350 degrees for 2-5 minutes, or you can place the dip on a warming tray.

Notes & tips for these Peeps s’mores

  • I made this recipe around Easter, so I had the pastel Peeps to work with. However, remember that Peeps are now available for almost every major holiday in different shapes and colors (Ghosts and Pumpkins for Halloween, Trees for Christmas, etc), so you can make this dish (and be festive) all year round!

These Peeps s’more are the ideal holiday treat for any s’mores fan! Your favorite chocolate (or candy!) is topped with sugary marshmallow Peeps and then baked in a shallow, oven-safe dish to sweet gooey perfection. Can use classic graham crackers or cookies for dipping.

  • Preheat oven to HIGH broil.
  • In a shallow, oven-safe dish of your choice, add chocolate chips and spread into an even layer.
  • Arrange Peeps on top of chocolate chips, covering as much of the chocolate as you can. Don’t be afraid to squeeze as many Peeps in as you can.
  • Set prepared dish in the oven and allow to broil for 1-2 minutes or until the tops of Peeps are lightly browned. Be careful; Peeps can burn quickly, so keep an eye on them!
  • Serve Peep s'mores immediately with graham crackers for dipping. If you find that the chocolate has not melted enough or has cooled over time, you can microwave the dish (usually 15-30 seconds will do) OR you can set the oven to 350 degrees F and bake the s'mores for another 2-5 minutes.
