If you’re a regular to this little food blog, then by now you must know one thing for certain:
I absolutely adore appetizers.
If left to my own devices, I could easily (and very happily, I might add) sustain myself on delicious bite-sized morsels for the rest of my days.
My infatuation with hors d’oeuvres comes two-fold: for one, it seems that every time of year is the perfect time to serve a good appetizer. Birthdays, holidays, celebrations – no matter the reason why everyone has gathered, you can almost guarantee everyone will be happier with a table full of savory (or sweet!) party foods and drinks. And for two, appetizers give you so much more freedom to mix and match different tastes, flavors, and blends than a typical “large” meal can. If you’re a fan of coming up with the great food pairings, then hors d’oeuvres are a certifiable playground for your taste buds.
And that brings me to why I’m so excited about today’s post, since I’ve come up with a new pairing that I absolute love. Whether I’m making a light lunch for myself or serving some delicious eats for our guests, the blend of savory and sweet has me absolutely hooked.
Behold: Smoked Salmon on top of a chili avocado spread on marbled rye bread and served with Tazo® Passion® Tea!
The rye bread makes a perfect base so that the slightly spicy chili avocado spread can be front and center, and the smokiness of the salmon just brings up tastiness a notch (or ten).
But for me, my absolutely favorite part is the Passion® Tea pairing. I love how the delicate blend of sweetness in the tea (from the orange, rose, and passion fruit mix) becomes the perfect counter for the savoriness of the avocado and the salmon. This combo brings out the best in both.
You could make this with either the hot or cold version of Tazo Passion® Tea. I could see myself switching depending on the time of year – hot for the winter and iced for the summer – now that the weather will be turning soon, I know I’ll be stocking up on the hot Tazo Passion® Tea for the foreseeable future!
And while this sweet and savory combination has become my favorite indulgent lunch as of late, I can’t wait until we invite our neighbors over. With as much as I love these two together, I just know they’re going to be blown away by it!
Of course, let’s not forget that it’s still hot in some areas of the country (we’re still rocking 110 here in Phoenix!) so there may be times when an iced tea would be a better fit. I still prefer the hot tea bags, but if you’re looking for something a little more chilled, Tazo Passion™ Tea also comes in an iced version!

Smoked Salmon on Rye with Passion Tea
- 1 large avocado
- 1 tsp chili paste more or less to taste
- 1/4 tsp lime juice
- 1 pinch salt or to taste
- 1 pinch pepper or to taste
- 3 slices rye bread
- sliced smoked salmon chilled
- In a small bowl, mash avocado until mostly smooth. Add chili paste, lime juice, and salt and pepper to taste, then mix well.
- Spread chili avocado mix on rye bread and top with sliced smoked salmon.
- Serve immediately with Tazo® Passion® Tea.
