About Snowball Cake Dip
I’ve posted many dessert dip recipes in the past, but I gotta tell ya, I’m pretty excited to share this one with you. To be honest, this all started out as a joke (“I make so many dessert dips, before you know it, I’ll just be putting snow in a bowl and calling it a dip!”) but it quickly became a crazy enough idea that might just actually work.
And, you guys, it did. It totally worked.
So I’m sending out the call for all cake, chocolate, and coconut lovers, because the snowball cake dip has arrived!
Now, I don’t know if this is a regional thing, but I always knew what a snowball cake was growing up. And it wasn’t just the actual big, cut-and-serve cakes; plenty of my friends loved the pink Hostess Sno Ball cakes, too.
I have to confess that I’ve never been much of a coconut fan, but when it comes to a creamy mixture of white cake, cream, and chocolate? I’m totally on board.
Another great thing about snowball cake is that there are so many different ways to make it. Some make a white cake with chocolate filling, some have chocolate cake with white filling, and others still will have multiple layers of both flavors.
As you can see in the video above, I opted for layers, and I’m so glad I did. They worked wonderfully with this cake dip, and make each dredge through the dip taste a little different every time!
This cake is also one of those desserts that don’t have set rules of what it “has” to be. I’ve seen it made with cheesecake filling, traditional cream, and others still use a pudding base for the filling.
When it came to this dip, I didn’t want to choose, so I hit all of the marks with a creamy combo of cake, pudding, and cheesecake.
And as for how this dip tastes?
If you’re from the south like me and are already well acquainted with snowball cake, this dip is spot on. It’s like serving the cake without all the fuss of baking!
However, if this is a new flavor adventure for you, I promise this will be a hit with anyone who likes coconut candy. The white cake is the only wild card here, but c’mon – what doesn’t white cake go with? It’s the ultimate base for any dessert!

After making as many dessert dips as I have, you start to get a feeling for what goes best with these ultra creamy treats.

How long can you leave out a dessert dip?
Whenever you serve a dip for your guests to enjoy, you should always keep track of how long it sits at room temperature.
For most foods, the general rule of thumb is that a perishable item should not be in the “danger zone” for more than two hours. And by “danger zone”, this is usually at or just above room temperature, which is typically how this dip will be served.
As the party goes on, you can move your dip back to the refrigerator once you get past the two-hour mark. If your guests still want more dip, let it chill for at least 30 minutes before bringing it back out again.
notes & tips for this snowball cake dip
- For this recipe, I highly recommend using a stand mixer or a hand mixer. This isn’t a recipe you can make by hand with a whisk.
- If you’re a fan of the packaged Sno Ball cakes, you can add a few drops of pink food coloring to the cake dip so it looks more like the Hostess treats.
- If you or your guests aren’t crazy about coconut, you can replace the shredded coconut in this dip with chocolate dips or other bits of candy that you like. (This tip was courtesy of an old friend of mine!)

Snowball Cake Dip
Whether you love classic snowball cake or the Sno Ball treats from Hostess, this unique cake dip will be perfect for any cake, chocolate, and coconut lover!
Using a (or + ), blend cool whip and cheesecake pudding mix on medium speed until combined, about 3 to 5 minutes.
Drop mixer speed to low and blend in white cake mix and milk, mixing until all dry ingredients are incorporated, about 3 to 5 minutes. Set finished cake dip nearby.
To assemble dip: add layers of cake dip, shredded coconut, and chocolate pudding as you see fit, smoothing out each layer as you go. Suggested order is cake dip, shredded coconut, then chocolate pudding, repeating these layers until you end with a thick layer of cake dip on top. Finish by coating the top of dip with a generous helping of shredded coconut.
Serve snowball cake dip immediately with your favorite cookies for dipping.
