About Tortilla Wrapped Bratwursts with Beer Mustard

We’re approaching the end of January, and you know what that means:

Game Day parties are soon to be (or already are) in full swing!

Whether you’re cheering for your favorite team or just there to watch for some of the best commercials of the year (here here!) you’re sure to be set with good company and good food. Better get ready for all the tasty finger food you can handle!

This also means I’m in my element because appetizer foods are kind of my “thing.” Whenever we do parties with our friends, I make it my personal challenge to come up with unique snacks to bring for everyone, and this year is no different. And since some of our friends recently expressed an interest in bratwursts, I knew just what to do: make bratwursts more on-the-go friendly by wrapping them up in

And since some of our friends recently expressed an interest in bratwursts, I knew just what to do: make bratwursts more on-the-go friendly by wrapping them up in tortilla, cheese, and cut into bite-sized pieces. Oh, and of course some beer mustard on the side for dipping.

With my plan in place, I headed down to Costco with my shopping list. I was specifically after TortillaLand brand tortillas, since they’re sold uncooked and give you the power to grill them to your liking. I knew Costco carried this brand, but I had to ask a floor manager to point me in the right direction (pro tip: Costco stores TortillaLand tortillas in the chilled “produce” section).

And as we were making the hike across the store, the manager turn to us and said, “Have you tried TortillaLand tortillas? Because once you have, you’ll never buy shelf-stable tortillas again. There is simply no comparison.”

Well, if that wasn’t confirmation enough that I was on the right track for this year’s best appetizer ever then I don’t know what is!

Because really, look how beautifully these cooked.

I chose to grill them nice and light and it was so nice to have that choice.

From there, I placed slices of American cheese on the tortillas, just enough to cover most of the edges (about 4-5 pieces of cheese per tortilla).

Then once the bratwursts are cooked, you place them directly on the cheese, letting the heat from the bratwurst help melt the cheese.

Fold the edges of the tortilla over and wrap the bratwurst nice and tight.

Drop the wrapped bratwurst back in a hot pan to help seal the tortilla. While you’re there, you can brown it a little bit more if you’d like. Then you only need to let the tortilla wrapped bratwursts cool a little before cutting them into bite sized pieces. Serve them with toothpicks and a yummy beer mustard and you’re set – your winning Game Day appetizer is now served!

Ingredients

Beer Mustard
  • 1/2 cup onion, minced
  • 2 tablespoon salted butter
  • 3/4 cup beer
  • 1/3 cup honey mustard
Tortilla Wrapped Bratwurst
  • 5 Tortillaland Tortillas, (uncooked)
  • 5 bratwurst
  • 20 slices American cheese

Instructions

For the Beer Mustard
  • In a small saucepan, add minced onion and butter. Let cook for 6-8 minutes, stirring frequently. Onions are ready when they first begin to brown.
  • Add beer and cook until mixture is reduced by half, about 6-8 minutes.
  • Stir in honey and cook for another 1-2 minutes until desired consistency is reached. Pour beer mustard in a dipping bowl and cover until tortilla bratwursts are ready.
For the Tortilla Wrapped Bratwurst
  • Prepare tortillas per package instructions: warm a large skillet or pan to 400 F. Add tortilla and brown for 30 seconds (or to desired doneness). Flip tortilla and brown for another 30 seconds. Cook each tortilla, then set tortillas aside to cool.
  • Before cooking brats, set up the tortillas: lay the tortilla flat and place cheese on top so that most of the edges are covered (see above photo).
  • Cook bratwurst in your preferred way, such boiled, fried, or grilled. I pan fried mine for convenience.
  • Immediately upon taking the bratwurst off the eat, dab it try (if needed) and place it on the cheese lined Tortillaland tortilla. Wrap the bratwurst tightly, then place the rolled bratwurst on a plate with the seam side down.
  • Once all bratwursts have been wrapped, warm another skillet over high heat. Place wrapped bratwursts on the skillet, seam side down, for 30 seconds. Check seam - it should be sealed flat. While the wrapped brats are on the skillet, you can brown the outside of the tortillas a little more, if desired.
  • Please wrapped & sealed bratwursts on a plate and let cool for about 10 minutes.
  • Check the cheese within the wrapped bratwursts. If it's still very runny, let the bratwursts cool for a bit longer. If the cheese seems firm, use a sharp knife to cut the bratwurst into 1-inch pieces.
  • Serve tortilla wrapped bratwursts with toothpicks and beer mustard dipping sauce.
